Day 02: Kigali – Ruhengeri
After an early breakfast drive NW to Ruhengeri, the main base town for gorilla tracking (approximately 2.5 Hour’s drive) on a good paved road through the countryside with its beautiful terraced hills that are so characteristic of the rural Rwanda. Upon arrival, there is a briefing by the Volcanoes National Park’s guides on how to behave in the forest and in the presence of mountain gorillas. You then transfer over mild bumpy roads to the trail head to start the trek. From the trail head, 10-20 minute walk through fields (cultivated land) to edge of forest, enter the park for a gorilla trek which will take you until around midday depending on where you find them. Once the gorillas are located all fatigue is forgotten, as the experience is often described as being the most profound natural history experience in the world. It is important to take plenty of water. It can rain at a few minutes notice, hence waterproof clothing is a good essential including zip lock bags for cameras. After the trek, lunch will be at your lodge. If time permits, visit the markets, villages and local communities or an optional visit to the little known by compellingly beautiful twin lakes Bulera and Ruhondo. Overnight in Ruhengeri.
Day 03: Ruhengeri – Gisenye
After breakfast a second gorilla trek is included this morning followed by lunch at the lodge. Drive to your resort on Lake Kivu (1.5 hours). Spend the afternoon at the lake. Lake Kivu is a 2,650 sq. km. extraordinarily beautiful inland sea enclosed by steep, green terraced hills along eastern Rwanda. Three resort towns of Gisenyi, Kibuye and Cyangugu are located along its shores and are connected by a wild roller-coaster road that tumbles through lush plantain fields and relic patches of misty rainforest to offer sweeping views over the blue waters with the nearby Virunga volcanoes providing a spectacular backdrop. The road winds endlessly in a countless number of twists and turns and the common storm clouds lend a ruggedly romantic panorama to this region. Gisenyi, the most developed of these resorts is set on a sandy beach lined with swaying palms and colonial-era hotels that exude an atmosphere of tropical languor. Overnight in Gisenye.
Day 04: Gisenye
After breakfast enjoy a full day at leisure to explore the local area. Overnight in Gisenye.
Day 05: Gisenye – Kigali
